Day 7 Part 2: Hiroshima

Posted by: rennoblliw on: June 18, 2009

Alright, I’ll try to wrap up day 7 right here and now.

After our deer and temple related adventures on Miyajima it’s safe to say we were all in a pretty good mood. Which is why we hopped on a train to the Hiroshima peace park to utterly depress everyone.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s a beautiful park with all sorts of important history and some of the most meaningful displays of emotion I’ve ever seen. But it is impossible to walk away from that museum feeling good about yourself, regardless of what country you’ve come from. It was a good reminder of how terrible atomic weapons are, and why it’s critically important that the world finds a way to live without the threat of these weapons wiping out civilizations. But the sights of this trip will speak more powerfully than I ever could.

That day really took a lot out of us, and I don’t know what could have give us energy other then letting the day go by and reflecting over what we saw. On my later travels I got to see Okinawa’s Peace Museum and that really affected me too. It was so sad learning about that Island’s past and the fate of so many of its people. But I think what affected me the most was the kindness I was given at both of those places.

That museum at Hiroshima was really powerful and not to mention detailed. I’m sure that you would get a better detailed description of what went down that day. All they told you in school was that the A-bomb was dropped and it ended the war. It didn’t tell you all of the gruesome details about what happened to the people that were affected by it.

I am really glad that we visited this museum on our trip. Even though, as you say, it was a downer, I think it is important for everyone (especially Americans) to see what kind of effects this kind of warfare actually had.
Some of the exhibits did not seem real because they were so grim.
On a lighter note, it was a beautiful building with an awesome fountain and park in front of it that really gave off the feel of ‘peace.’
